As a skilled oral surgeon, Dr. Soares has conducted countless tooth extractions throughout his career. Working with dental professionals throughout our community, many of our patients are referred to our practice by their general dentist or orthodontist. This is because Dr. Soares and our staff possess special training and education to perform extractions.
Types of Extractions
The most common type of tooth extraction is the removal of wisdom teeth. These teeth are unnecessary to oral function and when they begin to emerge, they can cause a number of oral health issues—mainly because these teeth erupt much later in life than other permanent teeth. In many cases, wisdom teeth become partially stuck (impacted) in the gum tissue because there simply isn’t room in the mouth for them to fully erupt. Impacted wisdom teeth may lead to abscesses and even infection. In other cases, when these teeth come in, they affect the placement of existing teeth. Improper tooth movement can cause teeth to become crooked or overlap. By extracting wisdom teeth at the appropriate time, patients can prevent many of these complications.
Sometimes other types of teeth require extraction. For example, children’s baby teeth may need to be removed to make room for emerging permanent teeth. This practice is especially common during the period of tooth transition and/or during orthodontic treatment. When it comes to extracting teeth during childhood, Dr. Soares will work with your family dentist or orthodontist to provide your child with the best treatment possible.
Adults often require extractions as well. This is normally due to severely damaged teeth that cannot be saved by restorations such as crowns or endodontic treatment such as root canal therapy. Reasons for extracting teeth in adulthood can include severe decay or wear and tear that has led to an infection of the root canal along with traumatic injuries that crack or break teeth.
